June 2025: Breakthrough funding and technology define CPO evolution

As summer approaches across Europe, the electric vehicle (EV) charging industry is entering a new phase of maturity and technological sophistication. June 2025 witnessed unprecedented capital mobilisation, with record-breaking funding rounds, the emergence of next-generation charging technologies, and strategic consolidation, signalling the sector's evolution from rapid deployment to sustainable, high-performance networks. From Believ's transformative £300M raise to the debut of megawatt charging for heavy-duty vehicles, this month demonstrated how CPOs are not just expanding capacity but fundamentally reshaping the infrastructure backbone of European electrification.

Let's examine the CPOs' strategic moves over the last month.

Northern Europe

United Kingdom

Believ secured £300M from Liberty Global, Zouk Capital, and major banks to deploy 30,000 public EV chargers across the UK, supporting the nation's 2030 target of 300,000 chargers. The funding will focus on on-street, rapid, and rural charging infrastructure. Brighton & Hove City Council separately appointed Believ to install 208 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers starting late 2025, representing over £5M in private investment.

EDF Energy acquired full ownership of Pod Point for £10.6M, following prolonged financial difficulties at the UK charging firm that has never achieved positive cash flow. The acquisition aims to stabilise operations and ensure continued investment in one of the UK's largest charging networks.

NAL developed standardised foundations that halve installation time for EV charging hubs, helping major CPOs like GRIDSERVE, BP, and Shell accelerate deployments. The modular system supports all charger types and future upgrades without major civil works, reducing costs and environmental impact.

Barnet Council partnered with char.gy to roll out 1,000 new EV charge points, with 500 installed in the next three months. The chargers are integrated into lampposts, powered by renewable energy, and funded partly by £800k from the UK ORCS scheme.

EasyGo has partnered with four councils in northern Scotland in a £300M deal to install 570 new EV charge points by 2028, more than doubling the region's network. Backed by £7M from the Scottish Government, this represents the largest EV infrastructure grant in Scotland.

Fastned opened its 33rd UK charging hub in Greenock, west of Glasgow, featuring four ultra-rapid bays expandable to eight and delivering up to 100 miles of range in five minutes using 100% renewable energy.

Aegis Energy partnered with Cloudics to develop 30 multi-energy refuelling hubs across the UK for commercial fleets, offering electric charging, HVO, hydrogen, and bio-CNG. The first site is scheduled to open in 2026, with five operational by 2027.

Sweden

Gothenburg added a third wireless EV charging station for 20 Volvo XC40 e-taxis at Gothia Towers, following a successful three-year trial. InductEV will operate all three sites under a "charging-as-a-service" model, supporting the city's Green City Zone targets with hands-free infrastructure.

Circle K opened its first fully electric charging station in Gothenburg, powered by Kempower's ultra-fast chargers. The site features 10 satellite units and 2 power units (totalling 600 kW), along with Autocharge technology for seamless charging.
