As EV adoption continues to rise, April has seen tremendous progress in Europe’s charging infrastructure landscape. From groundbreaking collaborations to large-scale network rollouts, Charge Point Operators (CPOs), city councils, and technology providers are racing to keep pace with accelerating demand. Here’s a breakdown of this month’s most notable developments across regions.
Northern Europe
UK – InstaVolt Expands Rapidly with New Sites, Partnerships, and Innovations
InstaVolt opened its newest EV charging hub at Caxton Gibbet near Cambridge, equipped with 12 ultra-rapid 160kW chargers and powered entirely by renewable energy. A new site in Crawley, near Gatwick Airport, features 160kW chargers adjacent to Starbucks, providing convenient access for commuters and travelers alike. The company also introduced a reduced standard rate of 65p/kWh at its Winchester Superhub, further incentivizing off-peak charging at just 50p/kWh.
UK – Gridserve Installs 3.6MW Battery System at Gatwick’s Electric Forecourt
Gridserve and UK Power Networks have installed dual 3.6MW batteries to power London Gatwick Airport’s Electric Forecourt, which features 30 EV bays. The system can power the site for up to three hours at full load and is supplemented by a 33.3kW rooftop solar PV array. This marks the fourth forecourt in UKPN’s territory, highlighting growing investment in grid-resilient EV infrastructure.
UK – Be.EV Unveils Manchester Charging Oasis
Be.EV is investing £4 million to convert a derelict petrol station in Failsworth into the Manchester Charging Oasis. The site will host 12 ultra-rapid 300kW chargers and include a Caffè Nero Express, serving over 26,000 daily commuters and aligning with Greater Manchester’s regional transport strategy.
UK – Suffolk’s Largest EV Rollout Underway
Suffolk County Council, in collaboration with Believ, will deploy 6,000 new EV chargers across the county. Backed by £5.3 million in LEVI funding and £16 million from Believ, the rollout will target residential streets and public car parks to increase access for households without off-street parking.
UK – Char.gy Launches £130 Million Project in Brighton and Hove
In the UK’s largest on-street charging project to date, Char.gy will install over 6,000 charge points across Brighton and Hove. Supported by LEVI funding, the project offers low-cost overnight tariffs (as low as 39p/kWh) for residents, addressing the needs of drivers without access to home charging.
UK – Zapmap Reports 2 Million Monthly Sessions
New utilization data from Zap-Map reveals that the UK’s public EV charging network now supports over 2 million sessions per month, with nearly 60% of users utilizing rapid or ultra-rapid chargers. Gridserve’s Exeter Electric Superhub was identified as the busiest site in the country.
UK – Zapgo and Alpitronic Accelerate Destination Charging
Zapgo has partnered with Alpitronic to deploy DC fast chargers across leisure venues, football grounds, and historic sites throughout the UK. The move expands Zapgo’s reach into key destination locations.
Ireland – Allego Joins Zapmap
Allego has partnered with Zapmap as a payment provider, enabling drivers to locate and pay at over 160 charging sites across the UK. Over 120 of these are based in London, improving access in key urban areas.
Sweden – Nima Energy Adds Kista Site, Reaches 56 Ultra-Rapid Chargers in Stockholm
Nima Energy has begun construction on a new 300kW six-charger site in Kista, bringing its total in Stockholm to 56. This expansion is backed by the EU and Sweden’s Klimatklivet initiative.
Central and Western Europe
Germany – ADS-TEC and HyperFast Boost Belgium’s Charging Grid
HyperFast has ordered battery-buffered ChargePost units from ADS-TEC Energy for deployment across Belgium. These 300kW-capable chargers reduce dependency on local grid upgrades and support Belgium’s growing fast-charging footprint.
France – Atlante Partners with Del Arte Restaurants
Atlante will install 180+ fast and ultra-fast EV charging points at 27 Del Arte restaurants in France. The stations will be embedded in parking lots and powered by 100% renewable energy, offering a convenient charging solution for diners.
France – EV Charging Points Surpass 129,000
France has now deployed over 129,000 public EV charge points, a 44% increase year-over-year. However, 72% of these remain low-power (≤22 kW), and only 4% support ultra-rapid charging, indicating a need for upgrades in power capacity.
France/Spain/Belgium – Eranovum Installs 1,000 Charging Points
Eranovum has commissioned 1,000 new EV charging points across Spain, Belgium, and France. The expansion supports the company’s cross-border e-mobility strategy and marks a significant milestone in regional network growth.
Netherlands – Q8 Partners with ADS-TEC for Battery-Based Charging
Q8 and ADS-TEC will install over 12 battery-buffered ultra-fast chargers across Belgium and the Netherlands. These systems deliver up to 320kW and can generate revenue through energy trading and advertising.
Netherlands – Leads Europe in EV Charging Access
According to gridX’s Charging Report 2025, the Netherlands tops Europe for charge points per capita (10.04 per 1,000 people) and per highway kilometer (66:1). The country now hosts 183,000 charging points.
Netherlands – Fastned Reports €86M in Annual Revenue
Fastned achieved €86 million in revenue for 2024, representing a 43% year-over-year (YoY) increase, with the addition of 50 new stations, over 140 GWh sold, and 5 million sessions delivered. Annual EBITDA hit €7.4 million, marking a second consecutive profitable year.
Poland – Powerdot Builds Over Half of New DC Chargers in 2024
Powerdot was responsible for 52% of new DC fast chargers in Poland in the first seven months of 2024. The company now operates over 900 plugs and has helped reduce the average DC charger spacing to just 6.1 km, matching Norway’s EV charging density.
Southern Europe
Italy – Fastned Opens First Italian Station and Reports Record Q1 Revenue
Fastned’s first Italian station opened in Brescia, marking the expansion of its operations to its eighth market. Q1 2025 revenue hit €28 million, up 48% YoY, while €36.5 million in bonds were raised. Fastned now operates 353 stations and has secured an additional 20 sites.
Italy – Ewiva Hits 1,400 HPC Chargers in 90% of Provinces
Ewiva, a joint venture of Enel X and Volkswagen Group, added 97 new HPC charging points in Q1 2025, bringing its total to over 1,400 across 400 stations. The network is interoperable with 100+ service providers.
Italy – Padua Adds 80 Fast Chargers with Solar Power and Storage
TSG Italia and Atlante installed 80 new EV charging points across Padova Nord and Sud, featuring solar-powered canopies, 558kWh battery storage, and intelligent energy systems—all running on 100% renewable power.
Italy – Poste Italiane Deploys 46 Charging Points in Friuli Venezia Giulia
Poste Italiane has activated 46 connectors across 23 sites as part of its 10,000-station rollout plan. Chargers are placed near post offices and deployed at no cost to local governments.
Portugal – Mobi.E Hits Record 660,000 Sessions in March
Portugal’s Mobi.E network saw 660,000 charging sessions and 14.6 GWh of energy delivered in March 2025. The network comprises 11,319 charging points, with 38.3% being fast or ultra-fast, and an installed capacity exceeding 377,000 kW.
Portugal – Powerdot Surpasses Tesla in France and Grows to 8,400 Chargers
Powerdot now operates 8,400 chargers across Europe and has surpassed Tesla in France. With a focus on destination charging, the company plans to grow to 15,000 units by the end of 2025, working with Kempower and DCS to enhance service delivery.
Spain – InstaVolt Triples Charging Hubs Within Weeks
InstaVolt is scaling rapidly in Spain, with 11 ultra-fast chargers already operational and plans to triple this figure soon. Upcoming hubs in Catalonia and Andalusia will significantly expand coverage.
Europe-wide Alliances and Industry Trends
Spark Alliance Formed: Europe’s Largest Unified Charging Network
Atlante, Electra, Fastned, and IONITY launched the Spark Alliance, a collaboration uniting over 1,700 stations and 11,000 charging points across 25 countries. The alliance enables seamless roaming with a single app and shared route planning, simplifying cross-border EV travel. All electricity is 100% renewable.
Volvo Energy Launches Portable PU500 Charging System
Volvo unveiled the PU500, a 450–540kWh portable battery system with a built-in 240kW DC fast charger. It can charge three trucks or 20 cars daily and supports low-grid locations with integrated power boosting and digital scheduling tools.
Policy & Regulatory Developments
EU Industry Regulation and Strategic Investment Outlook
The European Commission’s Industrial Plan continues to accelerate clean mobility adoption through regulatory alignment and targeted funding. Recent updates to AFIR implementation have reinforced interconnection standards and increased consumer protection requirements for public charging across member states. Meanwhile, Europe is projected to need over 8.8 million chargers by 2030 to meet demand—requiring over 23,000 installations per week, a pace not yet met.
Poland Launches €4 Billion EV Infrastructure Programme
Poland is investing €4 billion to overhaul its EV infrastructure, with a strong focus on building out charging stations for heavy-duty vehicles and subsidising the purchase of electric trucks. The programme, led by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW), is supported by the EU’s Modernisation Fund and aims to fast-track the country’s shift toward sustainable transport. The initiative also ensures alignment with EU climate regulations and underscores Poland’s commitment to modernising its freight sector.
Amsterdam Pilots Smart Charging with Equans and ANWB
Amsterdam has launched a six-month smart charging pilot in partnership with Equans, Deftpower, and the ANWB. The trial spans over 3,000 public charging points, incentivising drivers to declare their departure time to optimise grid load distribution. Participating EV users benefit from lower charging rates, contributing to grid resilience and smarter urban energy use.

GreenWay Secures €50M Strategic Investment from Mirova
GreenWay, a leader in EV charging across Central and Eastern Europe, has secured a major equity investment of over €50 million from Mirova, the sustainable investment affiliate of Natixis Investment Managers. This investment makes Mirova the largest shareholder in GreenWay Holding
