What Is the FLEXBOX and How Does It Ensure DSO Compliance in the DACH region?

The FLEXBOX: DSO-Compliant EV Load and Energy Management in the DACH Region
In our recent webinar, FLEXECHARGE co-founders Robert (CTO) and Nicolas (Head of Customer Success) introduced the FLEXBOX, a standardised, plug-and-play solution designed to simplify DSO interfacing and local energy management across the DACH region.
As Robert explained:
“What makes a CPO professional is standardisation, operational excellence, and having the tech stack under control.”
Why do CPOs in DACH need standardized EV load management?
German grid regulation, including §14a EnWG and VDE technical standards, increasingly requires controllability and local response to DSO signals. Similar regulatory frameworks apply in Austria and Switzerland.
Without standardisation, CPOs face:
- Longer commissioning timelines
- Higher installation and maintenance costs
- Increased operational complexity
- Greater regulatory exposure
Robert summarised the operational impact clearly:
“If you don’t standardise, it falls back on your feet in the long run. Commissioning takes longer and it becomes more expensive.”
A repeatable technical architecture is therefore essential for CPOs scaling across multiple grid regions.
How does the FLEXBOX address 800+ DSO interface requirements?
The FLEXBOX consolidates DSO control interfaces, local load management and networking into one pre-configured industrial cabinet.
It includes:
- Digital, analogue and Modbus interfaces for DSO telecontrol
- The GATEWAY is integrated inside the FLEXBOX cabinet and serving as the core load and energy management unit
- A built-in LAN switch with up to 24 Ethernet ports
- CE-certified, industrial-grade components suitable for transformer substations
The FLEXBOX is already being deployed in the ELECTRA high-power charging station in Chemnitz, a grid area operated by the local DSO inetz. The site demonstrates how a standardised architecture can meet regional DSO requirements while supporting scalable charging operations. Further deployments are planned across additional stations in Germany and the wider DACH region.
How does the FLEXBOX plug-and-play design improve operational efficiency?
During the webinar, Robert and Nicolas presented the hardware architecture in detail. The cabinet is delivered fully pre-wired, with all core components integrated. Installers connect everything externally; there is no need to wire inside the box.
The physical design supports fast and reliable deployment:
- Removable, coded connectors prevent incorrect wiring
- External Ethernet ports allow direct connection without opening the cabinet
- Dedicated space for a router and antenna connections enables flexible network configuration
- All components are integrated in a single enclosure to simplify maintenance and replacement
As Robert describes it:
“You don’t have to open the box to wire it. It’s simple and failure-proof to install.”
Standardised DSO integration for scalable EV infrastructure
As DSO requirements become more complex across Germany and Austria, EV charging infrastructure must respond locally, reliably and in full compliance with regional grid rules. Fragmented setups are no longer sustainable when scaling high-power charging hubs across multiple grid areas.
With the FLEXBOX, FLEXECHARGE provides a structured, deployable hardware foundation that integrates DSO interfacing and local load management into a single cabinet. The result is controlled scalability, compliant, resilient and ready for expansion across the DACH region.
