The Challenge
As ELECTRA expanded its high-power EV charging network across Germany, grid compliance became a key bottleneck. Germany’s more than 800 Distribution System Operators (DSOs) each apply different grid codes, control interfaces, and approval processes, making standardised rollouts difficult.
At a charging station in Chemnitz, operated under the local DSO, inetz , ELECTRA needed to meet specific grid control requirements without turning the site into a custom engineering project. The challenge was clear: comply with local DSO rules while keeping rollout speed, costs, and scalability under control.

The Solution
To address these challenges, ELECTRA deployed the FLEXBOX, FLEXECHARGE’s new plug-and-play grid compliance and load management hardware, at its charging station in Chemnitz, the first ELECTRA site in Germany where the FLEXBOX was implemented.
The FLEXBOX enables ELECTRA to meet local DSO requirements while maintaining a standardised rollout model by providing:
- A standardised technical interface to DSOs, ensuring compliance with local grid control requirements, including inetz.
- Plug-and-play commissioning, eliminating the need for site-specific engineering or custom integrations
- Local load and energy management, keeping charging performance stable under grid constraints
- Local, cloud-resilient operation, ensuring deterministic site control even during grid events or connectivity outages
- One local network for all energy assets, enabling coordinated management of chargers and future assets such as BESS or PV
By abstracting grid complexity into a single, standardised box, the FLEXBOX allows ELECTRA to deploy the same technical setup across sites, regardless of the local DSO, while accelerating grid approvals and reducing rollout risk.
Next Steps
Following the successful deployment of the FLEXBOX at the Chemnitz site, ELECTRA is positioned to replicate the same standardised grid compliance approach across additional German locations like Hausen bei Würzburg. With the FLEXBOX as a common technical foundation, future charging hubs can be deployed faster, with predictable costs and reduced engineering effort, regardless of the local DSO.
This positions ELECTRA to scale its high-power charging network across Germany with confidence, while remaining prepared for evolving grid requirements and future energy use cases.
