October 2026: Megawatt Charging Moves From Pilot to Product

October 2026: Megawatt Charging Moves From Pilot to Product
October 2026 was the month megawatt charging moved from pilot to product and capital discipline came to the fore. VINCI's Voltix opened a 1.5 MW-per-point truck station at a French motorway junction and Milence brought four MCS points online in Belgium, while Fastned paired 47% comparable revenue growth with a debt-funded build programme. Across the market, utilisation, financing structure and frictionless authentication are now defining which networks pull ahead.
Multi-Regional / Europe-Wide
Powerdot + Hubject: Plug & Charge Goes Live Across 7,000 Points in Four Markets
Powerdot has integrated more than 7,000 charging points in France, Spain, Belgium and Poland into Hubject's Plug & Charge ecosystem, so compatible vehicles authenticate and start a session at connection, with no app or RFID card required. Frictionless authentication removes a recurring source of failed sessions and support cost, and positions the network to capture OEM-routed traffic as more manufacturers activate ISO 15118 contracts. At this scale, Plug & Charge becomes a baseline expectation in Powerdot's core markets rather than a differentiator.
Fastned: 47% Comparable Revenue Growth and a Third Retail Bond to Fund 70 to 100 New Stations
Fastned reported quarterly charging revenue of €51.3 million, with comparable revenue up 47% year on year, and confirmed it will open 70 to 100 stations this year, bringing the total to 476 to 506 locations, with Germany nearing 70 sites. Growth remains debt-funded: €44.7 million went into the network in the first half, and a third retail bond of the year is currently open. The model validates high-utilisation ultra-fast hubs, but retail leverage is now central to the equity story.
Northern Europe
Denmark
Norlys: Aalborg Airport Hub Adds First Taxi-Dedicated Fast-Charging Bays
Norlys has opened a covered charging park at Aalborg Airport with five 400 kW chargers serving ten vehicles simultaneously, plus three 300 kW chargers reserved exclusively for taxis, the operator's first taxi-only bays. The site, which includes a lounge and vending, lifts North Jutland to 954 public fast-charging outlets by Norlys' count. Reserving capacity for a high-mileage taxi fleet at an airport creates predictable base-load demand, de-risking utilisation alongside more volatile passenger traffic.
Norway
Eviny and Mer: Competition Authority Opens In-Depth Probe as Drop-In Prices Rise
Norway's competition authority has opened an in-depth investigation into Eviny's proposed acquisition of Mer, warning the deal could reduce competition in fast and ultra-fast charging where few alternative operators exist. The combined business would hold 24% of the Norwegian market and 14% of the Swedish market. The same week, Eviny raised drop-in pricing from NOK 5.89 to 6.49/kWh, Mer from 6.29 to 6.49 and Uno-X from 5.50 to 5.90. In a mature market, consolidation is now as much a regulatory question as a scale play, and pricing power is under scrutiny.
United Kingdom
Believ: 600+ Chargers Across Ayrshire in Its First Scottish Public-Sector Concession
Believ has partnered with East, North and South Ayrshire Councils to deploy more than 600 chargers at around 300 locations: roughly 220 in South Ayrshire, 210 in North Ayrshire, and 180 in East Ayrshire, including the Isle of Arran. Speeds run from standard-plus AC to 50 kW rapid, backed by £2.8 million from the Scottish Government, with installation expected from early 2027. Believ also takes over the councils' ChargePlace Scotland assets, a clear template for private capital replacing publicly owned networks.
RAW Charging: Two Flagship Ultra-Rapid Hubs in Sunderland and Aberdeen
RAW Charging opened a 20-bay hub at Sunderland AFC's Stadium of Light (16 x 150 kW, 4 x 300 kW), investing around £750,000 to fund, operate and maintain it. In Aberdeen, a 14-charger hub with Hubber (10 x 150 kW, 4 x 300 kW) is now the city's largest ultra-rapid site, taking RAW past 500 sites. Both follow one playbook: host-provided land, operator-funded capex and dwell-time monetisation at high-footfall destinations.
InstaVolt: 16 Ultra-Rapid Chargers at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre
InstaVolt has energised 16 ultra-rapid chargers at Serpentine Green in Peterborough, available 24/7 and anchored by Tesco Extra, M&S Foodhall and food-and-beverage tenants. The site reinforces the retail co-location model, in which long dwell times and anchor-tenant footfall support utilisation outside commuter peaks. For CPOs negotiating with landlords, it is another reference case for hub-scale deployment, rather than token two-charger installations, at large-format retail sites.
Roam: Operator-Funded 170-Socket Rollout Across 14 ProsperCap Hotels
Roam has secured a contract to deploy 170 charging sockets across 14 UK hotels owned by ProsperCap, a portfolio operating under Hilton, IHG and Marriott brands. The mix of 158 x 22 kW and 12 x 50 kW rapid sockets is fully funded by Roam, so the hotels upgrade without upfront capital, and installation is already underway. The model validates long-dwell destination charging, where low capex per socket and overnight occupancy support predictable utilisation, with the host property locked in as a long-term site partner.
Central & Western Europe
Belgium
Milence: Temse Hub Brings Four 1,500 kW MCS Points Online
Milence has opened its 39th hub in Temse, its fifth in Belgium, with eight truck bays: four combining MCS and CCS, and four CCS-only, each up to 400 kW. The megawatt points deliver up to 1,500 kW, making Temse the operator's fourth MCS-equipped site. Ad-hoc pricing starts at €0.379/kWh excluding VAT, with volume contracts priced below that. With eleven more hubs under construction, Milence is setting the price and power benchmark against which other heavy-duty CPOs will be measured.
Netherlands
Qwello: Majority Stake in Groen-Eco Adds 1,400+ B2B and Destination Points
Qwello Benelux has acquired a majority stake in Groen-Eco, a Rotterdam-based operator running 720 charging units with more than 1,400 points across over 230 locations, focused on businesses, property owners and semi-public sites. Qwello, which operates more than 18,000 points across Europe largely through municipal concessions, gains an existing customer book and long-term secured locations. The deal diversifies revenue away from tender-dependent public concessions towards contracted B2B income with lower acquisition risk.
Germany
Deutschlandnetz: 100 of 200 Autobahn Sites Live as Completion Drifts Towards 2028
The federal Deutschlandnetz programme has opened its 100th fast-charging park at an unstaffed autobahn rest area, on the A81 towards Stuttgart, reaching the halfway mark of the 200 planned motorway sites. At roughly six openings a month, the remainder would run into 2028, against an original end-2026 target, as part of a €2.3 billion federal programme. TotalEnergies has opened 11 of its 33 allocated sites. For non-programme CPOs on these corridors, slower delivery extends the window before subsidised capacity fully lands.
Daimler Buses: 600 kW Brand-Neutral Coach Charging at Hamburg ZOB
Daimler Buses will build its third public e-bus charging site at Hamburg Central Bus Station, after Cologne and Munich. Four chargers of up to 600 kW are planned initially, expandable to eight points, at a terminal handling more than 80,000 bus movements a year, with commissioning in 2027. Open to all bus brands and refinanced through electricity sales, it is an OEM acting as a CPO in an underserved segment: scheduled layover charging with highly predictable utilisation.
France
Sorégies: Acquires bp pulse's French Ultra-Fast Network and Plans €100m Investment
Sorégies, the Poitiers-based energy group, has agreed to acquire bp's entire French ultra-fast charging business: 32 operating stations with more than 600 charge points, plus 14 sites in development adding nearly 200 more, along motorways including the A10, A11 and A71 and at shopping centres. The network will be rebranded under supply subsidiary Alterna énergie, with more than €100 million earmarked for e-mobility by 2030. Pairing a national electricity supply book with a charging estate is a vertically integrated play that turns supply margin into pricing power at the charger.
Voltix (VINCI Concessions): 1.5 MW-per-Point Truck Station Opens at Vierzon
Voltix, the VINCI Concessions subsidiary, has opened a heavy-duty charging station at Vierzon, where the A20 meets the A71 near the A85. Four points combine CCS and MCS at up to 1.5 MW each, with eight planned, sized to deliver a usable charge within the mandatory 45-minute driver break. It is the first site from a €90 million programme backed by VINCI Concessions, Épopée Gestion and ADEME Investissement, targeting 50 stations across France and Germany by 2028.
Fastned: Yutz Hub Debuts First Self-Service Kiosk in the French Network
Fastned has opened an eight-point, 400 kW station at Yutz in Moselle, near the A31 and the main routes into Luxembourg, operating 24/7. The site introduces Fastned's first self-service kiosk in France, with toilets, drinks and food alongside the chargers. For ultra-fast operators, on-site retail turns dwell time into ancillary revenue and supports session frequency at cross-border commuter locations, where repeat traffic underpins utilisation.

Spain
Electra: €70m Catalonia Programme Targets 30 Stations and 200 Charge Points
Electra will invest €70 million to expand its Catalan network to 30 stations and 200 charge points next year, up from eight stations today, all in Barcelona province. Its newest site at Sant Quirze del Vallès brings it to 50 points in the region, with seven openings planned before year-end, including Barcelona's Zona Franca, Girona, La Jonquera and its first site in Tarragona province. The plan rides Catalonia's public target of 9,000 new points, 2,000 of them above 50 kW, to 2030.
Repsol: 19-Vehicle Light and Heavy-Duty Hub at the A-4/A-43 Junction
Repsol has opened an ultra-fast hub in Manzanares, Ciudad Real, where the A-4 meets the A-43, with chargers of up to 360 kW serving up to 19 vehicles simultaneously across car and truck traffic. Spain's public network now stands at 53,373 operational points, with points above 350 kW up 23.32% and the 150 to 350 kW band up 27.60% since the start of the year. Mixed car-and-truck sites spread fixed grid-connection costs across two demand profiles, lifting asset utilisation on corridor locations.
Italy
Ionity: 12-Point, 600 kW Hub at Bagnolo San Vito
Ionity has energised a 12-point hub in Bagnolo San Vito, Mantua province, with up to 600 kW per point, open 24/7 and the first site of that power class in the province. It sits in a cluster that already includes a Milence heavy-duty hub, turning the location into a multi-operator energy stop. For CPOs, 600 kW hardware future-proofs sites for 800V vehicles, but the business case rests on capturing corridor volume against co-located competitors.
Looking Ahead
Three priorities stand out from October. First, plan heavy-duty capacity now: Milence and Voltix have set public benchmarks at 1.5 MW per point, so corridor sites without a megawatt-ready grid connection, or battery buffering to stretch it, risk early obsolescence. Second, treat authentication and roaming as margin lines: Plug & Charge at 7,000-point scale resets driver expectations, so track revenue per channel before renewing contracts. Third, diversify revenue: Qwello's B2B move and Roam's funded hotel model show contracted, long-dwell income offsetting volatile en-route demand. From FLEXECHARGE's perspective, the common constraint is grid capacity; operators who actively manage site energy will convert more installed power into revenue.
