The Challenge

As Iceland rapidly shifts toward electric mobility, Orkan is expanding its charging network nationwide. But one barrier appears repeatedly in the rollout: limited grid capacity at new sites.

In many locations, the local grid simply cannot deliver enough power to support multiple high-speed chargers. This leads to delays in station openings, added costs for reinforcement, and the risk of demand peaks that can disrupt operations.

For Orkan, the challenge is not just about keeping chargers online. It’s about ensuring every new station delivers a reliable fast-charging experience to drivers while staying true to Iceland’s renewable energy vision.

The Solution

To overcome these hurdles, Orkan is implementing FLEXECHARGE’s HARMON-E Energy Management System (EMS).

HARMON-E continuously monitors demand and intelligently balances power across chargers in real time. By distributing available energy dynamically, it prevents grid overloads and ensures drivers always receive the best possible charging quality.

One of the system’s most valuable features is peak shaving. By automatically setting a demand threshold based on average utilisation, HARMON-E ensures charging currents stay below that level. This minimizes grid capacity fees, avoids costly demand peaks, and allows Orkan to deliver reliable fast charging even at sites with limited grid access.

Looking ahead, Orkan plans to integrate Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with HARMON-E. This will allow sites to store renewable energy, smooth local demand, and even participate in energy trading, making the network more stable, efficient, and future proof.
