Energy Optimization and BESS Integration for E.ON Drive’s EV Charging Network
Supporting European roll-out of high-power charging stations despite grid constraints, while improving the bottom line
Energy Optimization and BESS Integration for E.ON Drive’s EV Charging Network

The Challenge
Scaling a fast EV charging network while staying within grid constraints is complex.
E.ON Drive operates across locations with varying grid capacities, exposure to peak-demand charges, and site-specific limitations that can slow the deployment of high-power chargers. At the same time, having Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) means charging sites must be designed to accommodate batteries without requiring major changes later.
To continue expanding efficiently, E.ON Drive needed a way to manage charging demand today while supporting the integration of BESS as part of its long-term infrastructure strategy.
The Solution
E.ON Drive works with FLEXECHARGE, as a supplier, to deploy intelligent energy management that dynamically controls charging power across sites where BESS are or will be deployed.
FLEXECHARGE’s system has successfully passed E.ON lab tests related to BESS, confirming its ability to operate reliably within E.ON’s technical and safety requirements.
The solution enables:
- Real-time load balancing across fast chargers
- Operation within defined grid limits
- Integration of BESS as part of the site energy setup
- A standardized energy control layer across sites
This approach allows E.ON Drive to scale charging infrastructure efficiently while maintaining full control over energy use. It will also give them the possibility to generate new revenue streams by leveraging the deployed BESS to tap into the electricity (spot) and flexibility markets.
Beyond passenger EV charging, truck charging represents another use case where BESS can play a key role. High-power truck chargers place significant pressure on local grids, and co-located battery storage can help smooth demand peaks and support stable operation, enabling scalable deployment of heavy-duty charging infrastructure across E.ON Drive’s European network.
Next Steps
Following supplier approval and lab test validation, the collaboration focuses on:
- Expanding the rollout of energy-managed EV charging sites.
- Integrating BESS at selected locations.
- Further optimizing peak demand and site performance.
- Preparing sites for advanced energy use cases as regulations and markets evolve.
These next steps support E.ON Drive’s long-term strategy for scalable, resilient EV charging network that can adapt to changing grid conditions and future energy requirements.

“As a CPO, we can’t simply wait for grid build-outs, which are often costly and take a long time. Instead, we need to think smarter about how we deploy batteries and explore new possibilities”
